You know that spring has finally sprung in the Eastern Sierra when Tioga Pass Road (the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park) opens for the year!

As of yesterday from the NPS, "Tioga Road will open for the season to all traffic on Monday, May 26, at 8 am. Limited services will be available along Tioga Road; bring your own appropriate levels of food and water. Vault and portable toilets will be available along Tioga Road (but not drinking water). No other services will be available along Tioga Road. There is no early access to cyclists this year."

We received some photos (see below) from the Tioga Pass area yesterday and "my oh my" does it look ready for some spring alpine adventuring! Plenty of snow to be found (and even some skiing if really dedicated). Be prepared for snow travel and camping regardless of the activity you plan on doing (birding, climbing, hiking, etc.). The snow is melting steadily, but it will still be hanging around for another few weeks at least so plan accordingly with snowshoes, crampons, etc.

Just as a heads up: There are no amenities nor drinking water along the Tioga Road. Only vault and portable toilets are available. Starting Tuesday, May 27, reservations are not required to enter the park until June 15. Reservations will be required to enter Yosemite National Park between 6:00am and 2:00pm June 15–August 15 (every day) and August 30–September 1 (Labor Day Weekend). No reservations needed if you ride the @yarts bus!
