27 May 2025 - Conditions Report: McGee Pass Trailhead Hiking & Wildflower Peeping

Our staff member (and prolific local photographer) Shelley was out on one of her usual adventures on Monday and discovered that McGee Pass Trailhead is in fine form in terms of hiking and wildflowers. Check out what she found and recommends below!

Activity During Report: On trail hiking on McGee Pass Trail (USFS) & wildflower peeping

Conditions:

Yesterday’s walk up the McGee Pass Trailhead near Crowley Lake was a joy as usual—especially in wildflower season. It’s the perfect outing for older hikers like me, families with kids, or anyone with a camera (read: avid outdoor photographers) and a love for nature.

Right now, the blooms are putting on a real show. A large variety dot the trail, lighting up the canyon with color. You don’t need to hike far to enjoy it—just a short stroll from the parking lot gives you stunning views and plenty of photo opportunities.

The creek is running, the peaks are still snowy, and the air smells like sage and sunshine. I spent more time crouched next to blossoms than actually hiking, and that’s just fine by me.

This is a trail you can tailor to your own pace. Whether you go a quarter mile or make it a full afternoon, the experience is rich either way. So grab your sun hat, pack some water, and take your time—there’s so much beauty to notice right now.
