  • 27 Dec 25 - Conditions Report: Buttermilk Boulders Hiking & Climbing

    December 28, 2025 2 min read

Courtesy of store co-owner Sabine who was curious to see what the conditions were like out in the Buttermilks after the recent storm because we were getting asked a lot of questions at the store by the climbers in town (all trying to avoid getting their Prius stuck driving out there lol)!

    Conditions Report:

Current As Of: 27 December 2025*

Activity During Report: Off trail hiking around the Tungsten Hills and the Buttermilk Boulders

Conditions: Following the Christmas snowstorm, the Buttermilks picked up a solid amount of snow. As of Saturday, December 27, the road is nearly snow-free up to the last half mile, though conditions remain very wet. A myriad of new washouts have formed, and small creeks are running along both sides of the road near the boulders. Take it slow through corners, watch for slick spots, and avoid soft shoulders—especially if you’re not driving a 4WD vehicle. probably best to avoid the road completely for a few more days if you do not have 4WD and a smidge of clearance (a.k.a. the road is not "Prius" ready just yet).

At the boulders, expect a mix of snow and dry climbing. While many blocs are still holding snow, there are plenty of dry landings and climbable lines under overhangs, making it possible to get a quality session in if you are willing to take what you can get. Daytime temperatures have been warm enough to encourage melt-off, and if current conditions hold, we expect significantly drier ground over the next few days.
