Staff member and guide Colin was out on the Mt Whitney Mountaineer's Route this past week with clients. Here is what he found in terms of conditions along the route and in the couloir.
Current As Of: 26 June 2026*
Activity During Report: off-trail hiking, snow/mixed climbing in a couloir, 3rd class rock scrambling.
Conditions:
Conditions on the Mountaineer’s Route of Mount Whitney are trending toward summer, but the upper mountain is still holding meaningful snow and mixed terrain.
Approach to Iceberg Lake: Mostly Dry - The route is essentially dry up to Iceberg Lake, with only scattered patchy snow in shaded or protected areas. No snow travel is required before the basin.
Couloir Conditions: Mixed Snow and Rock - The couloir still holds about 70–80% snow coverage. Travel is mostly on snow with an exposed rock band just past halfway up that does not require removing crampons. The summer line on climber’s left is increasingly viable and dry so one might try taking that up below the start of the East Face and East Buttress climbing routes before traversing over to the couloir. The snow is heavily suncupped and was firm in the morning when starting up. It was rather soft in the afternoon when coming down.
Upper Route: Patchy Snow and Verglas - The Final 400 still has patchy snow and some verglas. Staying on ledges helps minimize snow/ice exposure and keeps most of the climbing on dry rock, though short icy steps still exist depending on line choice.
Gear and Outlook - Ice axe and crampons are still recommended for now, though some parties may choose to stash them at the base or mid-couloir as conditions continue to melt out quickly. Expect continued rapid transition toward more consistent summer scrambling over the next week or so.
