Staff member and guide Colin was out on the Mt Whitney Mountaineer's Route again. Here are the latest conditions.
Current As Of: 03 July 2026*
Activity During Report: off-trail hiking, snow/mixed climbing in a couloir, 3rd class rock scrambling.
Conditions:
Conditions on the Mountaineer’s Route of Mount Whitney have trended even more towards summer with shin-high suncups forming in the remaining snow and overnight re-freezing becoming less frequent.
The couloir still holds about 60-65ish% snow coverage. However, if you take the summer line on climber’s left up below the start of the East Face and East Buttress climbing routes before traversing over right to the couloir, you only need to pass through 150-200 meters of snow when going both up and down. The snow was heavily suncupped and rather soft in the afternoon when coming down. I was able to do it without crampons and ice axe as a test, but I would recommend having both still with you as the conditions are in-between clearly needing them and clearly not needing them. That type of variability always warrants caution. Some parties may choose to stash them at the base or mid-couloir as conditions continue to melt out quickly. Expect continued rapid transition toward more consistent summer scrambling over the next week or so. The Final 400 still has patchy snow and some ice as does the Traverse. Staying on ledges helps minimize snow/ice exposure and keeps most of the climbing on dry rock, though short icy steps still exist depending on line chosen.
