Winter in the Eastern Sierra doesn’t have to mean downhill skiing or snowboarding to be magical. In fact, some of the most rewarding winter experiences here happen at a slower pace with snowshoes or cross-country skis on your feet, crisp air in your lungs, and big mountain views all around. Whether you’re looking for a low-key Valentine’s Day outing, a peaceful solo escape, or a way to try something new without committing to expensive lift tickets or specialized skills, snowshoeing and XC skiing open the door to winter adventure for almost everyone. These activities are approachable, affordable, and easy to tailor to your comfort level, making them perfect for beginners and longtime locals alike.
One of the best parts? Many of the most popular snowshoe and XC ski routes in our area follow roads that are closed to vehicles in winter, meaning gentle grades, wide corridors, and straightforward navigation. Below are four of our favorite local spots to get out and enjoy winter, whether you’re testing the waters for the first time or just looking for a reliable go-to on a winter day.

If you’re new to snowshoeing or XC skiing, this is one of the most friendly and rewarding places to start. Park at the southern end of Aspendell and follow Highway 168 as it winds gently up to Lake Sabrina. The route is about three miles one way, with a mellow, consistent gradient that makes it approachable for beginners while still feeling like a real outing.
Because the road is closed in winter, the path is wide and easy to follow, and the views just keep getting better as you climb -- think snow-covered aspens, granite walls, and a beautiful payoff at the frozen lake. This is a great option for couples, first-timers, or anyone easing into winter travel.

Rock Creek is another excellent option for both snowshoeing and classic XC skiing. Park near the Rock Creek Sno-Park or the East Fork Campground, and follow the road up toward Rock Creek Lake. The distance is about 2.5 miles each way, with a gentle grade that makes for relaxed, enjoyable travel.
This area tends to stay colder, so snow quality is often soft and consistent. It’s a scenic route that feels quiet and alpine without being intimidating. As always, it’s important to check the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center (ESAC) forecast if you plan to venture beyond the road or near treeline -- but staying on the road makes this a very safe and accessible winter option.

Park near Twin Lakes along Lake Mary Road, close to Tamarack Lodge, and continue past the winter road closure toward the north end of Horseshoe Lake. This out-and-back route clocks in around 2.5 miles each way and offers a mellow, scenic cruise through the heart of the Mammoth Lakes Basin.
Because it follows a snow-covered road, navigation is simple, and the grade is friendly for newer snowshoers and skiers. You’ll pass frozen lakes, forested sections, and wide-open views that make this area feel special even on a short outing. It’s a great choice if you want big scenery without committing to a big day.

For a shorter but more energetic outing, park at or near Mammoth Mountain’s Main Lodge and head up Minaret Summit Vista Road. This route is about 1.5 miles each way and includes a steeper section, making it a fun step up for those looking to push a little harder.
Because of its proximity to the resort, this is typically the busiest of the routes listed here—but it’s popular for good reason. The views toward the Minarets and surrounding peaks are stunning, and the short distance makes it easy to fit into a half day. It’s a great option if you want a workout with a payoff.
