  • Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoody: The New Industry Standard for All Sun Hoodies

    May 27, 2026 7 min read

Spring is here and summer is quickly approaching. For us here in the Eastern Sierra (and everyone in the northern hemisphere in general), this change in the weather means not only a change in the activities that we are doing, but also a change in our wardrobes as the summer heat starts to cook here in the high desert. Even when the air temperature may be mild, the altitude makes the sun that much more intense, meaning sun protection is at a premium!

This means critical part of any person's wardrobe in the Eastern Sierra is the mythical sun hoody -- a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt with a built-in hood designed specifically for sun protection during outdoor activities. Instead of relying only on sunscreen, it uses fabric with a high UPF rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to block harmful UV rays - think wearable sunscreen that doesn’t sweat off. Most sun hoodies are made from breathable, quick-drying materials that keep you cool even in direct sun. You aren't truly an outdoorsy person here on the Eastside unless you have an opinion as to the best brand and owns at least 2 or 3 of them!

Well, this year Patagonia released a new UPF-rated sun hoody made from their famously comfortable Capilene Cool material! Better yet, the sun protection does not rely on applied treatment or coating of some sort that can wash off, it literally comes from how they wove the fabric so it will retain its protective rating after wash cycles far longer than any other sun hoody in the industry. Woah, indeed.

But does the hype actually match their actual performance out in the field?

Well, unsurprisingly, the whole staff here at the store got one when they came in last month and have been putting them to the test all over. Here's what they found and have to say!

How and Where We Tested the Sun Hoody

Our primary gear tester, Colin, a staff member and guide, wore the sun hoody for 25+ days over a two-month period while climbing in Las Vegas, teaching in Fremont Canyon, Wyoming, and taking an AMGA alpine course in Colorado. This included weather ranging from sunny, dry, and 90F+ degrees all the way to mini-hurricanes with sideways rain and frigid 40F degree weather in shaded canyons with strong wind that felt downright alpine in nature.

Five other store staff members have worn the sun hoody for at least five days each over the last two months in and around the Eastern Sierra to support the testimonials given.

The Specs & Features Direct from Patagonia

    • Fabric Details: Lightweight fabric delivers quick-drying moisture control with a wicking finish and a textured back that elevates the fabric off the skin for better airflow.  Provides 40+ UPF sun protection (blocks 97.5% of UVA/UVB rays from the sun). Single-knit, micro-crimped fiber construction generates a naturally sun-protective effect that won’t wash out over time.

    • Hood Details: Generous hood with a button closure is engineered to fit over a ball cap or most climbing helmets and provides additional sun protection

    • Sleeve Details: Sleeves are designed for easier, more athletic arm movement and a better fit

    • Thumb Holes for Sun Protection: Thumb holes at the cuffs provide added sun protection for the backs of hands

    • Pocket Details: One vertical-zip chest pocket with a corrosion-resistant zipper securely keeps small essentials close

    • Construction Details: Designed with minimal stitching and seams for enhanced comfort and reduced chafing

    •

      Weight: 176 g (6.2 oz)

The Performance: Testimony from the Testers Themselves

    • Fabric: This hoodie walks a really fine line: it feels light enough that you expect it to feel flimsy, but it never actually performs that way in the field. It doesn’t get swampy or sticky, even when you’re fully soaked in sweat in direct sun. Air still moves through it just enough that it never feels sealed off from the environment—but it’s worth noting it’s not quite as “airy” as a standard Capilene tee. Instead, it lands in a sweet spot: slightly more coverage, slightly less airflow, but way more usable sun protection. Durability has been the quiet surprise here. Despite repeated abuse - scrub oak, manzanita, squeeze chimney moves, off-trail bushwhacking, and at least one unfortunate encounter with cholla cactus - it’s holding up far better than expected. One small hole across all testers is the only real damage reported, and that came after weeks of intentional and unintentional abuse in high-desert terrain.

And importantly: the UPF performance hasn’t degraded. After 10+ wash cycles and consistent use, there’s been no noticeable drop in sun protection—something that can’t be said for a lot of treated sun hoodies that slowly “fade out” over time.

    • Hood: The hood is where this piece quietly separates itself from a lot of competitors. Unbuttoned, it still sits securely without constantly collapsing or slipping back and allows for small extra airflow - a small but meaningful detail when you’re moving all day. Buttoned, it becomes a true sun shield: the neck, lower face, and ears stay fully covered without needing constant adjustment. It’s also surprisingly helmet-compatible without turning into a floppy mess. Even with a climbing helmet on, it stays functional rather than restrictive. You notice it most when looking sharply upward, but otherwise it disappears in the best possible way: it just stays where it should.
    • Sleeves & Thumbs: The sleeves are intentionally long—and it matters more than it sounds. With the thumb loops engaged, the hoodie effectively turns into built-in sun gloves, fully covering the backs of your hands without adding another piece of gear to manage. That’s a big deal in places like the Eastern Sierra where sun exposure stacks fast over long approaches and belays. The extra length also plays well for climbers with longer wingspans. Even when reaching overhead, mantling, or moving through steep terrain, the cuffs don’t ride up and expose your wrists—which is often where cheaper sun layers start to fail. In short: it stays “on” you, not just “on your torso.”

Comparing the Cap Cool Sun Hoody to Other Brands?

If you’ve worn a few sun hoodies, you already know they tend to fall into predictable categories:

Some are ultra-breathable but feel paper-thin and wear out fast. Others are more durable but turn into personal saunas the moment the sun hits 80 degrees. And a lot of them rely heavily on surface treatments that feel great early on… then slowly wash out over a season or two.

The Capilene Cool Sun Hoody doesn’t completely reinvent the category—but it does tighten the range between those tradeoffs.

Compared to lighter “desert-racer” style sun hoodies such as the Outdoor Research Echo or the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake, it feels a touch more structured and slightly less airy at first wear, but in exchange you get noticeably better durability and more consistent coverage over long days. Compared to heavier, more traditional hiking sun layers such as the Ridge Merino Solstice, it breathes better, dries faster, and doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a damp base layer by midday.

Where it really stands out is consistency. It doesn’t dramatically excel in one single category so much as it refuses to fall apart in any of them. Heat, wind, repeated abrasion, and constant movement don’t seem to knock it off its game.

In short: it’s not the “lightest” or the “most breathable” or the “most durable” sun hoodie on paper—but in real-world Eastern Sierra conditions, it’s one of the few that doesn’t force you to pick which of those things you’re willing to sacrifice.

    The Verdict

After two months of real use in some of the most unforgiving sun and mixed alpine/desert conditions, what is the verdict?!?

    • We are fans....like BIG fans of it. It’s worth noting that it’s quietly displaced other sun hoodies in testers’ packs and closets, not through hype or novelty, but just by repeatedly getting chosen. When something gets worn 20+ days in a row by a primary tester in conditions where you have plenty of other options, that says more than any spec sheet does. There are lighter sun hoodies. There are more breathable ones. There are tougher ones too. But very few that sit in the middle this comfortably without obvious compromises showing up after a month of hard use. This one just keeps working—no drama, no surprises.
    • The increased price point is worth the difference in quality compared to Outdoor Research, Black Diamond, or Mountain Hardwear sun hoodies. No doubt. If you think we are biased (which is fair since we are not running a charity here), take it from our store shelves and customers --- our modest store has already sold over 25 this year in only two months of having them in stock!
