Sometimes the best reminders of how lucky we are to live here come from hearing about someone else’s day out. My co-worker and local photographer Shelley (@ilovetheeasternsierra) recently took advantage of great winter conditions to do a day trip through Death Valley National Park, and her experience was too good not to share. Here’s her report from the road.
Current As Of: 23 January 2026*
Activity During Report: Road trip for the day from Bishop with short hikes from car at various notable stopping points
Trip Details:
I spent a day driving through Death Valley National Park recently since it is prime season and it ended up being one of those trips that packs in a surprising amount without feeling rushed. With clear skies and comfortable winter temperatures, it was an ideal time to explore some of the park’s classic stops in a single day.
One of the highlights was Badwater Basin, which is currently filled with water and now commonly referred to as Lake Manly. Seeing water spread across the salt flats at the lowest point in North America is something you don’t get to experience often, and it completely changes the landscape. The reflections and scale of it all made this stop especially memorable.
From there, I headed to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, which are always worth visiting. They’re easy to access, but once you walk out into the dunes, it quickly feels quiet and expansive. It’s a great place to wander, take photos, or just enjoy being somewhere that feels totally different from the mountains.
I also made a stop at Artist’s Palette, where the mineral-stained hillsides add an unexpected burst of color to the desert scenery. Even on a quick visit, it’s one of those places that really sticks with you.
Overall, I’d absolutely recommend Death Valley as a day trip, especially during the cooler months. With good road access and several iconic spots close together, it’s easy to see a lot without committing to a long itinerary. If you’re in the Eastern Sierra and looking for a change of scenery, this is a great way to experience a completely different landscape in just a day.
