  • 09 May 2025 - Conditions Report: Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route/ North Fork Lone Pine Creek

    May 23, 2025 2 min read

It's officially permit lottery season on Mount Whitney, but one of our employees was lucky enough to snatch one this week for the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, better known as the Mountaineers' Route.

And she was able to summit!

    Conditions Report:

Current As Of: May 09, 2025*

Activity During Report: Off trail hiking, mountaineering.

    Conditions:

The road to Whitney Portal is open all the way! Both the winter closure and the other closure outside of Lone Pine are gone. Bonus: the Whitney Portal store is open! Biggest Pancakes of the Eastern Sierra await!!

Going up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, the route has only a few snowy patches up until you get to Lower Boyscout Lake.

Yes, the infamous E-Ledges are dry!

Above Lower Boyscout Lake is where you ascend into winter conditions with lots of snow. Iceberg Lake has currently no open water, you need to melt snow.

The chute is in decent shape, the snow if firm but not icy in the mornings. It does soften up during the day, though. If you decent in the afternoon, you'll find yourself postholing a lot.

The final 400 were doable, you can find a route that consists of steep snow and exposed rock.

Safety Note: Ice axe and crampons are a must at this point. A helmet is also extremely recommended. Spring time is prime rockfall season. Mt. Whitney is no easy feat, especially if you aren't used to being at altitude. Our employee lives in Bishop and plays in the High Sierra year-round, so it was no problem for her. However, we do recommend thorough acclimatization if you aren't used to high altitude.

Also, keep in mind that there is lots of wet avalanche activity in the Sierra Nevada these days. The temperatures are high, and the snow gets soft...

Looking down the Final 400 - don't attempt this without winter mountaineering gear and the skills needed to use it!
