Looking for a scenic escape that doesn’t require a big hike or lots of planning? Shelley, one of our longtime Eastside Sports staffers and a prolific local photographer (@iloveeasternsierra), recently spent her July 4th exploring Mono County and Yosemite’s eastern edge by car and on foot. Check out what she found for a potential trip idea of your own!

    Trip Details

If you’re short on time or just can’t decide where to explore, a scenic drive through Mono County up to Tuolumne Meadows is one of my favorite ways to experience a little bit of everything the Eastern Sierra has to offer. That’s exactly what I did this July 4th—packed a few snacks, grabbed my camera, and hit the road.

Starting with panoramic views from Conway Summit, I worked my way into Yosemite’s high country from Lee Vining via Tioga Pass (CA Hwy 120), stopping for roadside rambles on the trails near the road and wildflower sightings. The meadows are lush right now, with bursts of color from blooming lupine and paintbrush, and the glacial-carved granite domes of Tuolumne practically glow in the afternoon light.

Even if you’re not up for a big hike, this stretch offers plenty of easy access points to alpine beauty, making it perfect for anyone wanting to soak in the magic without too much planning. Sometimes the best way to adventure is to simply drive, wander, and see where the day leads.
