  • 01 Jul 2025 - Trip Report: Lake Sabrina Trail Hike

    July 05, 2025 2 min read

We had a couple of staff birthdays this week and our prolific staff photographer Shelley (@iloveeasternsierra) went out for a quick jaunt at Lake Sabrina during her big day! If you’re looking for a mellow but magical hike near Bishop, CA, Shelley’s recent out-and-back trip to the far end of Lake Sabrina might be your perfect inspiration. It is a great short hike for all visitors to experience the magical alpine beauty of the area, regardless of age or experience.

    Trip Report:

Current As Of: 01 July 2025*

    Activity During Report: Hiking (on-trail)

    Conditions

The Lake Sabrina trail starting from the trailhead at the dam is in fantastic shape—completely dry and free of snow or ice—making it an ideal early-summer outing for hikers of all experience levels. I spotted wildflowers galore trailside along the entire route, from classic purple lupine to vibrant patches of firecracker penstemon, coyote mint, buttercup, and columbine. I even found fragrant mountain mahogany dotting the lakeside in sunnier stretches.

At the far end of the lake, there’s a gentle creek crossing that was easy to navigate thanks to all the natural debris—sticks, branches, and solid footing from surrounding vegetation. While there’s no guarantee your feet will stay completely dry, trekking poles are highly recommended to help you stay balanced and dry-footed as the trail has some small ups and downs. I forgot mine and wished I had brought them the entire time to make the hike even more enjoyable.

This trail offers nonstop views and botanical beauty, but I suspect there may be even more blooms up toward George Lake or the Tyee Lakes, for those wanting to extend the adventure.

Whether you're a plant lover, a photography buff, or just looking for a peaceful walk surrounded by color, now is the time to get out and experience Lake Sabrina in full bloom.
